La Befana also has a key role to play at the Piazza Navona Christmas Market – in reality, this isn’t a Christmas market as we know it in the UK, but one geared towards children, that runs up to Epiphany.. The setting’s definitely a stunning one: on the 6th, it was too crowded to even get anywhere near Bernini’s Fountain of the Four Rivers, but some of the other landmarks, including the Fountain of Neptune, and St Agnese in Agone, provided impressive backdrops to the colourful scenes.
As well as toy Befane and decorations for trees and presepi, food was a big theme in the square – sweets, chocolate, snacks. And I mentioned coal in one of my last posts – well, we just had to get some of this sweetie coal to try!
